VISION

OUR VISION

We are committed to protecting wildlife, fauna & flaura & appreciate that our paying guests enable us to pursue our vision of providing a wilderneess sanctuary to the local wildlife. Sadly native habitats & food sources are becoming scarce for wildlife, along with their ability to survive. As long as we can do so, we will continue to plant trees, provide water, shelter, food & convert our property into a leafy sustainable oasis for wildlife. Althougn not certified wildlife carers, we are highly experienced in rescuing and saving injured animals, with our love for helping the needy starting in the early childhood years. Memories of all the animals we have saved over the years bring us joy and sorrow for those we have lost. One day we will publish some short stories in rememberence of our friends. Animals are so much like humans and with love, constant care, music (occassionally), kisses, medication and nutrition, miricles can be achieved.
Our goal over the next few years is to install more water tanks and an off grid solar system, plant more fruit trees for the wildlife, along with tall native trees and lower trees and shrubs, to offer shelter and homes to the wildlife. Since owning the property whe have planted over 100 trees and look forward to that number increasing to fill out some of the less dense areas. Not only do we have a passionate loving relationship with the land and wildlife, we also have a connection to the huge old house and feel it is our duty to keep her standing, and when possible, help her shine. It has taken many years of dedication and sacrifice to hold onto our forever home and we have a long way to go yet. We hope Brookfield Retreat will form part of the landscape for many more generations. If buildings can last hundreds of years in Europe, surely they can be made to do so in Australia right?
  • Planting fruit trees for wildlfe
We have planted over 100 trees
Our paying guests enable us to pursue our vision of providing a wilderneess sanctuary for the local wildlife.
  • We love the buzzing of the bees
Bees are the pollinators of ourflowers, fruits and vegetables
Bees are beautifle little creatures. If we see them in the pool we always rescue them and feel sadness when we are too late.
  • Green Tree frogs
The beauties come out when it rains
Growing up in the NT there were always tree frogs in the toilets and showers. We don't see many in Brisbane, but when we do, they are treasured and bring back childhood memories.

SHARING WITH WILDLIFE

Wallabies, possums, kookaburras, cockatoos, magpies, currawongs, king parrots, owls, bees, hawks, plovers, lizards, snakes, deer, kangaroos, bilby's, and more, take shelter and source food from our property. The previous owners planted a few fruit trees which bear fruit, and we have planted many more. The birds and possums particularly love our mangos, banana's, macadamia, guava and mandarines. We mostly leave the fruit for the animals, though if there is plenty, we enjoy the some too.
Wildlife and Domestic Pets
There is no doubt about it, domesitcated animals sometimes attack wildlife and therefore we don't allow guests to bring pets. In most cases, the wildlife we've tried to save over the years has been as a result of an injuyry from a cat or dog. Wildlife, like humans are creatures of habit and cats and dogs learn thouse habits and can be preditors agains the innocent creatures.
Driving for Wildlife
Cars are the next big killer of wildlife, so please always drive slow when driving in leafy areas. We can never forget the horrific wildlife deaths and injuries we've seen over the years, with the most recent being a family of ducklings crossing the road on Mogill Road, simply on their way to get water from the creek and a young wallaby trapped between the barriers in Indooroopilly.
